Home Delivered Meals
Home Delivered Meals are nutritious meals delivered to older people who are homebound because of illness, physical or mental impairment or if otherwise isolated. Home Delivered Meals are offered for a suggested donation. Delivered meals may not be available is some communities.
At least one Home Delivered Meal is delivered hot, other meals may frozen depending on the delivery area. Meals contain one-third of the current recommended dietary allowance. Menus are approved by a qualified individual and posted in advance.
Most home delivered meals are delivered by volunteers. Finding volunteers who are willing to drive far out into the countryside to deliver meals is difficult. For years senior centers have struggled to find ways to get their meals to isolated, homebound seniors in rural areas of Southern Illinois.
To inquire about receiving a meal delivered or volunteering to deliver them, call your local senior center focal point.
Meals are also served family style in senior centers, high-rise buildings, and community buildings. See the Family Cafe Meals program for more information.
